THE NEW EARTH

A poem presented in comic form. The first panel shows a Black girl (Anya) in an astronaut's helmet and a space themed pajamas. She's sitting inside a kind of metal pod, ready to go to bed. The text reads: We had to sleep before we walked the skies.
A space ship flies away from earth. The text reads: Escaped the well and burst forth free.
Another Black girl (Ida) stands in black at a funeral, looking down into a casket. The text reads: For nothing is reborn but first it dies.
Ida stands outside, still dressed for the funeral, looking up at an acorn on a tree. The text reads: Failing earth exhaling its last sighs;
A rocket ship flies away through space. The text reads: Far, far the new home for humanity.
Anya is sleeping in the space pod, arms crossed over her chest. The text reads: We had to sleep before we walked the skies.
A row of hypersleep pods are shown at a distance, behind a glass wall. On the wall is a sign, cut off by the panel edge. The visible words say: HYPERSLEEP-- WARNING: All-- REST IN PEA--. The poem text reads: Ten thousand souls suspended in the ice.
Ida sits alone in a bedroom with two beds. The poem text reads: Through all the empty places we must be--
Ida cups the acorn in her upturned hands. The text reads: For nothing is reborn but first it dies.
A view from behind the winshield of the spaceship, showing the stars blur as it travels toward a new sun. The text reads: A star we follow to our paradise.
Ida is drawing a picture of two girls holding hands and floating in outer space. The text reads: A visionary, dreaming people we--
Ida is tucked into bed, holding her drawing, with Anya's teddy bear next to her. The text reads: We had to sleep before we walked the skies.
A view of the new sun out of the window by Anya's pod. The text reads: In this we trust, that hope before us lies--
Ida stands by a grave in the snow, holding her drawing. The oak tree is behind her, empty of leaves. The text reads: The evidence of things we do not see.
A close up of the gravestone which reads: Anya Price 2014-2023. The poem text reads: Nothing is reborn but first it dies!
The spaceship has landed on a shore, and the travelers are exiting. On the horizon, a blue sun rises. The text reads: A morning when a newer sun shall rise.
Anya, looking older, stands in the shallow water and waves at something out of panel. The text reads: Our eyes will open on a glassy sea.
Anya's pod, now empty. She's left her helmet behind there. The text reads: We had to sleep before we walked the skies.
In the foreground are Anya's and Ida's graves. Behind that is the oak tree, full of leaves and growing another acorn. Behind that, Ida and Anya run to each other by the shore. The sun is still rising behind them. The text reads: For nothing is reborn but first it dies.
